I’ve learned to think of negative thoughts as old friends coming to visit. Or, even new friends knocking on your door inviting themselves in.
There used to be a time in my life where I felt like negative emotions & negative thinking needed to be eliminated. That they were my enemies. That I must replace them with positive thinking to live the best life possible.
I’ve learned that’s not true.
Pretending as if those feelings & thoughts don’t exist only makes you feel better for a moment. It may get you through a difficult time, but, it doesn’t address the root of the feelings.
It wasn’t until I started to embrace the negative thoughts and listen to what they had to say that I learned what they’re really there for. They exist as a nudge.
A small way of saying, “Hey, something is not right in your life right now. You need to take some time to figure it out.”
Those thoughts aren’t meant to stay in your mind forever, they shouldn’t be making a permanent home.
But, much like seeing a single termite can lead you to finding a shaky foundation in your house, a single negative thought can lead you to a shaky foundation in your soul.
If I kill the single termite, it doesn’t mean my foundation is healthy. It just means I don’t have to look at it.
Often, thoughts of worthlessness root back to unhealthy and unsupportive relationships. Thoughts of being overwhelmed could mean you haven’t set good boundaries for yourself.
Thoughts of being behind in your life may mean you aren’t pursuing the things that make you come alive.
I want to encourage you today to touch your negative feelings, hold them in your hands and ask them why they’re there.
Try a few things and see what puts them to rest once and for all.
You deserve a healthy mind, not just a moment of positive thinking.
