Yep, that’s a picture of a tarot card! What’s going on here? Crazy fortune telling? Not quite. Tarot cards do not see the future, and your trusty blogger is not a psychic. So, what’s the point? Tarot is a tool for your kit. The cards represent archetypes that can be used to stimulate your creativity and encourage problem solving. Pretty useful stuff whether you’re growing a business, a family, or getting through your day. It’s easy to get caught up in answering emails and posting on Instagram, and forget to check in and see what you really want and need to be doing. Incorporating tarot into your daily practice is a powerful opportunity to have a conversation with yourself. When you pull a card, you are opening the channel to talk to your intuition. What does the card remind you of? How does its meaning make you feel? These can be clues that can help to focus your efforts and provide a structure for growth.
One way to work with tarot is to ask what the energy for a day, month, or year will be. Energy is a loose term, as it should be. Think vibe, opportunity, feeling… whatever resonates for you. When you ask for the energy, you are asking for an idea of how to approach your life during that time. This provides a lens through which to look at your work and your personal life.
We’re a few weeks into 2017, and now that the crazy of the New Year has past, it’s a great time to take a look ahead and dig into the kind of year you want to live. The energy for 2017 is The Crone. The Crone, also known as The Hermit is more traditional tarot decks, is an invitation to pause and go within. Reversed, the call is more urgent, and there is a sense of disconnection from our intuition and an inability to accept that sometimes we must wait before we act. How does this play out in 2017? Entirely up to you. Working with The Crone is a chance to develop your gut instinct. Whether you’re running a business or running your life, you know what your intuition is: the feeling deep in your core that something needs to be done, or that something is true or will succeed regardless of what others say. In the Crone Reversed, we feel disconnected because we won’t stop running around crossing things off of our to-do list long enough to hear what our intuition is saying. This year, The Crone asks you to pause, to take time for quiet moments of self-care and reflection, and to make sure that your actions are thought out rather than impulsive.
That might be the real key to this work in 2017: releasing impulsivity. It’s easy and tempting to conflate impulsivity with intuition, but real intuition is quieter. Intuition is the small voice that over time gave you the confidence to start that project or advertise your skills. It’s the voice that even now is planting seeds for the next step. But it takes time for seeds to grow, and the action that bursts forth without reflection is very likely the kind of action to avoid this year. The Crone does not suggest that impulsive actions will have a damaging result, but you will likely have to retread to get what you really want.
Use this energy as a tool to focus your efforts in 2017. When can you pause rather than act? How will you trust yourself and your own intuition? Where do you have a tendency to rush, and what will you do to slow down? The Crone is here as a reminder: take your time and give your ideas the space to come to fruition. You have the answers, you just have to listen.
