Forward motion, momentum, and action: these are good things, right? Whether we’re running a business or working towards personal goals, we like movement. We can equate movement with progress, inching ever closer to the achievements that frame our lives. Sometimes, however, that relentless drive forward can feel like no progress at all, like we’re suspended in space and time when all we want is a conclusion. This month, the 8 of Wands invites us to inspect our need to be settled, and asks us to find a way to be comfortable while everything is up in the air.
The 8 of Wands represents a huge burst of energy and forward momentum but, when turned to the left like it is for February, suggests discomfort with the process, like we don’t know where the motion is taking us and we’re not sure if we want to go there anyway. We want, at the very least, to know where we’re heading so we can put on the breaks if necessary. Let’s go a step further: are we trying to prevent change? Do we feel ambivalent about a certain opportunity, or even afraid? This month, the energy of the 8 of Wands is a reminder to pull back and look at the big picture. We may not be able to perfectly see the end result of any changes, but we can release some of the fear that change provokes. We will land at some point, and when we do we can reassess and course correct if necessary.
In the meantime, enjoy the ride. Motivation towards movement is a gift, and if we can accept the discomfort and the impatience, we can take advantage of the 8 of Wands energy to push forward any parts of our work that feel stagnant. This is not the month to worry about the end result, but rather to embrace the invitation to create change and to find the pleasure in flying through the air at top speed towards an unknown destination.
