What’s Your Story? A Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop

What’s Your Story? A Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop
49.00 75.00

Everyone who aspires to write can benefit from learning the elements of storytelling. Story creates an emotional connection between reader and teller, one that inspires, teaches, and stimulates discussion. In this workshop you’ll learn the elements of great nonfiction storytelling – from identifying your literary conflict to grasping narrative structure to developing your plot, characters, and setting – and leave with a solid understanding of the techniques you need to create memorable and unique true stories that linger in the reader’s mind long after they finish the last word.

Did you resolve to write more in the New Year? Do you write for fun or business? Blog or journal? No matter what type of writing you do, this creative nonfiction workshop will help you master the elements of good storytelling to make your true stories read like fiction.

In this workshop designed for writers at all levels, you’ll learn the elements of nonfiction storytelling. Through a combination of dynamic teaching and hands-on exercises, you’ll leave able to:

  • Identify Your ‘So What’:  What’s your reason for writing? How can you identify and narrow your literary conflict?

  • Find Your Authentic Voice:  Who are you as a writer? How can you make your writing sound like the voice in your head?

  • Master Narrative Structure:  How do you craft a killer narrative hook? When should you end? How do you keep the middle from muddling?

  • Show, Don’t Tell: What literary devices and sensory language can you deploy to illustrate your experiences?

  • Employ the Storyteller’s Toolkit:  How do you develop plot, setting, character, and dialogue?

  • Edit and Polish Your Work: How do you know when you’re done? What are the essentials of revising and proofing?

You’ll also practice idea-generation techniques like timed freewriting, writing to a prompt, and writing a 100-word story—and have the opportunity to share your work with the group. Because the best storytelling is really an exercise in story sharing in community – connecting human to human through the communal experience of telling and listening.

How To Take Killer Photos That Sell: A Photography Course For Small Business Owners

Asheville Folk Workshop: How To Take Killer Photos That Sell: A Photography Course For Small Business Owners by Christina Foret

Some photos make you go "meh".

Some photos make you go "I desperately want that!"

Businesses who can make customers feel the latter are on to something. (HINT: It's called being profitable.)

In our image driven market, it can be so dang expensive to hire a professional photographer every time you need photos (which if you're on instagram, is like every single day). Because of this, many small business owners take the job into their own hands- sometimes to their own peril.

Your photos are either helping grow your brand and sell your products -or they aren't.
If you find yourself saying "they aren't", don't worry. It only takes a small amount of training to take your business photos from "meh" to "I desperately want that!"

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF:

You constantly find yourself frustrated about your photos
You want to create photos that represent you and your business in an authentic way
You are ready to take your business to the next level in online content
You have a personal blog or an online presence but you want to sharpen your skills curate your brand
You are ready to start growing your following and turning followers into clients

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • how to create photos that truly represent your brand, attract the right audience, and SELL.
  • Important photography elements & tips without having to learn all the settings of a camera and technical terms (everything you learn in this workshop you can implement with your iPhone)
  • hands on instruction; we will have a full photoshoot because doing is more important than hearing
  • my favorite easy-to-learn photography secrets
  • editing tips and more!

Also, there will be wine.

*Bring your camera or iPhone and something to take notes with.
*If you are a product based business, bring a few of your favorite products.

Asheville Folk Founder: Christina Foret.

Workshop Teacher: Christina Forêt

I was a professional wedding photographer for 7 years shooting weddings from Nashville to Hawaii and beyond. I started Asheville Folk as an image based business that grew quickly because I knew the basics of photography and was able to implement that understanding into our brand. I want to help you do the same.

Social Media From "HUH?" to "YAY!"

SOCIAL MEDIA FROM “HUH?” TO “YAY!”
With Persona Creative and Asheville Folk

Spend the afternoon with the Persona Creative team for this crash course in all things social media. You’ll have a blast as you work on some solo writing exercises, brainstorm with a small group, and get hands on with easy phone photography tips and tricks. The afternoon will be broken up into four mini sessions, including: Social Media Strategy, Determining Your Identity, Kickass Copy and Engaging Hashtags, and Making the Most of Phone Photography. We’ll spend time talking about Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and more. This course is perfect for creative entrepreneurs, small business owners and their staff, and bloggers - there’s something for you to learn regardless of your level of experience!

Session 1: Stop, Strategize
Figuring out where you should be active online and what you should be posting can be a total pain in the ass. During this session you’ll spend some time working through question prompts, solo writing, and large group discussion to determine the best platforms for you, your brand, and your business. We’ll talk about the benefits to each platform and how to make the most out of what you post.

Session 2: Determining Your #Aesthetic
So, you know where you want to post, now it’s time to figure out what to put online. During this session we’ll talk about the importance of having a consistent visual identity online and a voice that matches the clients you’re trying to reach. Working on your own, you’ll spend time coming up with the aesthetic you want to use and the way you want to speak to your fans. We'll talk about post themes and content planning. You’ll also spend some time sharing ideas with a partner.

Session 3: Kickass Copy and WTF are Hashtags
What do you say for yourself? This session will be all about writing captions that captivate and using hashtags in a way that makes a difference. We’ll talk about the importance of using a call to action and how emotion plays into what you write online. Then we’ll dive into figuring out hashtags for your business or brand. We’ll all spend some time coming up with captions to photos we provide.

Session 4: Making the Most of Phone Photography
The final part of our day will be super interactive - bring your phones (and, if you're a maker, the product you create)! We’ll do a quick crash course on the basics of photography, discuss composing the perfect shot, and go over free apps you can use to edit and refine your photos! We’ll also chat about when to post the gorgeous photo you capture. You’ll spend some time in the training space composing and capturing photos, ending the day by sharing them on Instagram for your friends and fellow trainees to see!
